Wieger van wageningen enjoi ad / no love for the euros We always felt as if we were just some Eurotrash… We were just like, fuck that, let’s just do our own shit. In an interview with us in 2014, Pontus Alv discussed how being relegated to Emerica’s “Euro team” eventually encouraged him to launch Polar skateboards: “It’s about having a platform to express yourself as a skater. Eventually, some alienated European skaters decided to do something about it. Some companies, like Element, gathered enough foreign riders to launch European teams entirely separate from their American counterparts, but they didn’t put Europeans on the same pedestal as their American riders. “We always felt as if we were just some Eurotrash… We were like, fuck that, let’s just do our own shit.” Instead, they packaged them as miniature “Euro teams” and lumped them into montages or credits sections in their videos. But American brands were hesitant to fully put foreigners on their teams. US brands also started picking up some of these Europeans to bolster their overseas appeal (think Lakai getting Nick Jensen, Danny Brady, and Jesus Fernandez). So Europe, with its abundance of perfect spots and a sense that law enforcement there treated skateboarders more casually, became a go-to skate destination.Īmerican crews started venturing more often to Barcelona and from country to country to film for full-length videos. In the late 2000s, much of California’s skate spots had become blown out and the crackdown from police officers, security guards, and skate stoppers had become intolerable. Since the cost of doing business in Europe back then was relatively high, and the European skate market was considerably smaller, it made sense for Flip to migrate to the US and aim to break into the industry from within.īut Cliché and Blueprint helped plant the seed in European skateboarders’ minds that homegrown brands could be sustainable businesses and could play a major role in the skate industry. After Death Box started to stagger at home, they moved operations to California and rebranded as Flip with a European team ( Tom Penny, Geoff Rowley, and Rune Glifberg) that skated in the American style of big rails, big gaps, and big airs. Those brands operated domestically, sponsoring local heroes like Lucas Puig and Chewy Cannon, and releasing strong full-length videos that showcased the perfect plazas and cutty spots that Europe is recognized for today.ĭanny brady palace ad / photo: sam ashleyīlueprint and Cliché were lauded for sticking to their roots and taking the opposite approach of Flip, which originally started in the UK as Death Box. They both agreed that in the late 2000s, the two most influential brands within Europe were Blueprint (out of the UK) and Cliché (out of France). To get a rough timeline of the modern European skate market, I spoke to Wes Morgan of UK-based Rock Solid Distribution and Oli Merkelbach of German-based Beast Distribution. ![]() Hjalte halberg + pontus alv / photo: sam ashley ![]() ![]() So to understand how these brands broke out of the mold of niche foreign entities and claimed their places in the skateboard industry, we decided to do a little reflecting. Now they run globally-respected brands that rival and perhaps overshadow some of the longest standing American brands. In the ’80s, the Munster Mash contest in Germany attracted talent from around the world, and the Radlands contest similarly brought skaters from everywhere to the UK in the ’90s.īut in recent years, European skaters have upped their game considerably. Copenhagen, London, Paris, Malmö, and so many other cities across the continent have thriving scenes that the rest of the world is finally paying serious attention to.Įurope’s skate scene technically dates back to the early 1970s, when Per Welinder was a freestyler in Sweden before moving to California to join Powell-Peralta and eventually partnering with Tony Hawk to start Birdhouse. European skate brands really have their shit together these days, and they’re no longer conforming to the status quo set by the old skate-guard of the American West Coast.

![]() I love the way they engineer their plates and the fact that it comes with all the bolts and detailed instructions. Simply put, you need one! I’m going to use Domiworks for this task. At the time that I started this project, this transmission was dirt cheap, $450 USD to be exact. I ended up with the 6 cylinder version out of an ’08 335i. The trade-off is the bell housing is also bigger, but if you are mating one to a bigger engine, such as an LS series engine, it may be the right one for you. The V8 version typically holds more torque since they were made for the M series vehicles. There are different variants, two have bell housings for the inline 6’s and the others for the V8s. These can be found in a plethora of BMW chassis. The go-to option for front engined, rear wheel drive platforms is the GS7D36SG. If you’d like to do the same, the first thing you’ll need to do is figure out what transmission you want. The benefits are worth the extra complexity for me. With all those cons being said, I’m still putting one in my S2000. This can be rather difficult and time consuming to get into your project car but I’ll go into details on some solutions later on. The BMW system uses a transmission control unit (TCU). Well if you are familiar with BMWs, you know their electronics can be rather complicated. Earlier, we talked about how the gearbox is controlled electronically. The other big hurdle is controlling the DCT. Yes, editing means cutting up your car or getting my favorite tool, a big freaking hammer and bashing some sheet metal. It’s far wider than most transmissions, so it will need some editing to get in. That leads me to my next con the DCT gearbox is massive. Imagine trying to replace your transmission at the track while you are laying on your back, debating what made you make these poor choices in the first place. In comparison, an S2000 transmission weighs roughly 50-lbs less. For example, the GS7D36SG gearbox out of an E92 BMW weighs around 150-lbs. It isn’t all rainbows and unicorn farts though, there are some cons to these types of swaps. DCT’s also have an advantage over a motorsports sequential gearbox in a key way you don’t need to install a hydraulic or pneumatic system if you want to run paddles for shifting since it’s all integrated into the transmission. The amount of research and development that goes into an OE manufactured part is truly amazing. Lastly, these gearboxes can be found in road going cars such as the E90/92 BMW 335 and M3, which means they have gone through a ton of engineering to make sure they operate correctly. Imagine being able to left foot brake every corner the amount of time you can shave adds up fast. When you are on track, though, not having to worry about downshifting and heel-toeing is a huge advantage no matter how good you are at rev matching. I know some of you ‘purists’ just threw your phone out the window because you would be losing the “driving experience,” and if that’s the case then this may not be the transmission for you. A ‘true sequential’ can be even faster, but a motorsports gearbox has a lot of negatives: cost, maintenance, and availability just to name a few.Īnother key element is the elimination of the clutch pedal. It cuts down the time that the turbo doesn’t receive exhaust gas flow, which, in layman terms, helps the engine remain in boost. ![]() This is a big deal when it comes to cars that are turbocharged. ![]() Some DCTs can shift a gear in just 40 milliseconds compared to the 500 milliseconds that a typical human takes while driving in anger. There are quite a few pros to a DCT compared to a traditional manual transmission. If that’s not enough for you though, Exedy does sell upgraded clutch packs. What that means for you and me is that it enables the clutch packs to handle more torque. ![]() The clutch packs are internal, instead of being external like in a manual transmission and are either ‘wet’ or ‘dry.’ Enthusiasts would be most interested in ‘wet’ gearboxes, as the clutch packs are bathed in oil to cool them down. The shifts are all electronically controlled and do not require input from the driver, but can be actuated with paddles or a lever. There are two input shafts, with one fitting inside the other. One transmission and clutch control the even numbered gears and the other controls the odd numbered gears. Imagine you have two transmissions with two separate clutches. Let’s break down what a DCT is in the simplest way. What’s the latest buzz in the racing community? “It’s got the shifting speed of a sequential, with the maintenance and reliability of an OEM gearbox.” That’s right, we are talking about DCT or dual-clutch transmissions! I’ll shed some light on what the heck they even are, pros, cons, and some of the parts you’ll need to put one in your race car. ![]() Sabato Marco Siniscalchi, Jinyu Li, Chin-Hui Lee Hermitian based hidden activation functions for adaptation of hybrid HMM/ANN models Ngoc Thang Vu, Wojtek Breiter, Florian Metze, Tanja Schultz Initialization schemes for multilayer perceptron training and their impact on ASR performance using multilingual data Navdeep Jaitly, Patrick Nguyen, Andrew Senior, Vincent VanhouckeĬross-lingual and ensemble MLPs strategies for low-resource speech recognition Yeming Xiao, Zhen Zhang, Shang Cai, Jielin Pan, Yonghong YanĪpplication of pretrained deep neural networks to large vocabulary speech recognition Xie Chen, Adam Eversole, Gang Li, Dong Yu, Frank SeideĪre sparse representations rich enough for acoustic modeling?Ī initial attempt on task-specific adaptation for deep neural network-based large vocabulary continuous speech recognition Pipelined back-propagation for context-dependent deep neural networks O'Neil, Oriol Vinyals, Patrick Nguyen, Andrew Y. ![]() In the two calculated transition states (endo and exo), the ratio of the distance between C–O to that between C–N was more than one, whereas in the product, this was reversed ( Figure 2). Pioneering computational studies on the mechanism of the intermolecular nitroso hetero-Diels–Alder reaction by Houk demonstrated that the reaction proceeds in a concerted fashion through an asynchronous transition state. Mechanistic studies of the nitroso hetero-Diels–Alder reaction In the reaction of arylnitroso dienophiles containing a nitro group in close proximity to the reaction center, unsubstituted dienes show a higher reactivity than substituted dienes, due to steric effects. ![]() However, the electronic effect is not the only factor responsible for the ease of the nitroso hetero-Diels–Alder reaction. In general, cyclic dienes were more reactive than their acyclic counterparts, and dienes with electron-donating substituents, such as α-terpinene and 2,4-hexadien-1-ol, were more reactive than those with electron-withdrawing substituents such as sorbic acid or ethyl sorbate and their unsubstituted counterparts, 1,3-cyclohexadiene and 2,4-hexadiene. The reactivity of dienes has also been studied for the reaction with acyl- and arylnitroso dienophiles that are bound to a solid support. This compatibility with such a range of dienes reflects the remarkable inherent activity of the nitroso agents, especially the acylnitroso moieties. Acyclic dienes are still reactive even while bearing a number of substituents, including both electron-donating and withdrawing groups at the 1 and/or 2 positions. Cyclic dienes such as cyclopenta-, cyclohexa- and cycloheptadiene as well as a number of more complex substituted derivatives have been reported as being highly reactive substrates for the reaction. ĭienes: There is a wide range of acyclic and cyclic dienes available for the nitroso hetero-Diels–Alder reaction. Additionally, acylnitroso compounds can be generated by the rearrangement of diazonitroalkanes 26, the photochemical cleavage of 1,2,4-oxadiazole-4-oxides 25 and the cycloreversion of 9,10-dimethylantracene adducts 27 ( Scheme 7). In 2015, the Whiting group reported an extensive study of acylnitroso compounds prepared in situ by the catalytic aerobic oxidation of hydroxycarbamate using CuCl 2 and 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline in methanol. In a recent work by Tusun dirhodium caprolactamate, and the aerobic oxidation in the presence of catalytic amounts of Cu(II) and pyridine were used for the preparation of acylnitroso compounds. These include the oxidation of nitrile oxides or the corresponding hydroxamic acids using, for example, periodate, Dess–Martin periodinane, Swern oxidation conditions, lead and silver oxide, and transition-metal oxidation with peroxide as the oxidant. ![]() Compounds 1a–c will be studied in more detail in this review.Īcylnitroso compounds are generally prepared and used in situ due to their extremely reactive nature and the conditions have been summarized previously. Nitroso compounds: Nitroso compounds are highly reactive dienophiles often used for the hetero-Diels–Alder reaction and the most frequently used representatives are depicted in Figure 1. The main aim of this review is to provide insight into the fundamental relationships between the structures of the reactants and the regio- and stereoselectivity of the hetero-Diels–Alder reaction as well as the possibility of controlling the regio- and stereoselectivity of 3,6-dihydro-2 H-1,2-oxazine formation. Special emphasis is drawn to the influence and control of the reaction under solution and solid-state reaction conditions. This review will thus focus on the regio- and stereoselectivity of the nitroso hetero-Diels–Alder reaction. The possibility to control nitroso HAD reactions is the most relevant fact for using the nitroso hetero-Diels–Alder reaction for the syntheses of biologically important molecules. These aspects were partially covered in a review by Yamamoto in 2006, which focused on asymmetric nitroso hetero-Diels–Alder reactions, following the review by Miller that was published in 1998. However, none of these reviews focused on general aspects of the regio- and stereoselectivity of the nitroso hetero-Diels–Alder reaction and the possibility of its control. Several excellent reviews on nitroso hetero-Diels–Alder reactions have been published in the past, including general reviews on hetero-Diels–Alder reactions and their applications in organic synthesis, applications of nitroso hetero-Diels–Alder reactions for the synthesis of azasugars, and the utilization of nitroso hetero-Diels–Alder reactions in natural product synthesis and the synthesis of bioactive molecules. ![]() ![]() Moving to a Backblaze or something too I've also considered as an additional backup option. In many cases, both the agent and the patient are clear, like a child (the patient) who is abused by his parent (the agent). According to this theory, humans intuitively perceive helpful or harmful phenomena through a ‘dyadic template’ consisting of an agent and a patient 9, 10. We draw our hypotheses from the cognitive sciences, focusing especially on the theory of dyadic morality, which suggests that phenomena will gain supernatural explanations when they have an ambiguous causal agent 8. If people use religious beliefs to explain the world, what about the world do they seek to explain? We answer this question by surveying supernatural explanations in a global sample of societies. Although this reasoning is popular, we still know little about the gaps that people use religion to fill. But a broader interpretation of ‘god of the gaps’ is that people use supernatural agency to explain phenomena that have ambiguous causation. A narrow interpretation of this account could be that people use religion as a stopgap when a phenomenon has no clear scientific explanation (for example, the origin of the universe) 7. Since the nineteenth century, scientists, philosophers and theologians have interpreted supernatural explanations using a ‘god of the gaps’ hypothesis-people infer supernatural agency behind phenomena that they do not understand 5, 6. In these examples, humans make supernatural explanations by claiming that a supernatural agent (for example, a god, ancestor spirit or witch) or supernatural force (for example, karma, evil eye) is responsible for some earthly event. ![]() In the modern world, 90% of Muslim Tunisians believe that the evil eye can cause physical harm 3, and many American Christians perceived the COVID-19 pandemic as a form of apocalyptic divine punishment 4. Ancient Chinese and Korean societies used divine intervention to explain and justify dynastic change 1, and Egyptians, Aztecs, Celtic and Tiv people used the will of gods to explain celestial cycles 2. Humans have long used religious beliefs to understand the world. Our results show how people use supernatural beliefs as explanatory tools in non-industrial societies, and how these applications vary across small-scale communities versus large and urbanized groups. Despite the dominance of supernatural explanations of natural phenomena, supernatural explanations of social phenomena were especially prevalent in urbanized societies with more socially complex and anonymous groups. Quantitative analysis of ethnographic text across 114 geographically and culturally diverse societies found that supernatural explanations are more prevalent for natural than for social phenomena, consistent with theories that ground the origin of religious belief in a human tendency to perceive intent and agency in the natural world. This article explores whether cultural groups invoke the supernatural more to explain natural phenomena (for example, storms, disease outbreaks) or social phenomena (for example, murder, warfare). Humans across the globe use supernatural beliefs to explain the world around them. ![]() This is presumably to reduce the slowdowns that could be caused by constantly searching through the millions of blocks in a Terraria world.
